Atherton Veterinary Clinic

Best vet in town! Always accommodating with schedules and we take both our cat and dog here since moving to Salina. Our pets love him!

Was in Salina for a member who was in the hospital from another city and Atherton was so helpful in allowing us to bring our chihuahua in while the craziness was happening in our lives. They didn't question us. They took care of everything. And we're so thankful!

Greatest staff and vet in town!!

I brought a stray cat in planning to get him checked for multiple things to make sure it was safe to keep him when I already have a cat. I left with barely any questions actually answered. First of all, Dr. Atherton came in and immediately asked me (quite frankly, silly) questions like “how old is he?” or “how much does he eat each day?” despite the fact I’d had the cat for a day and a half and had already mentioned that. Also, as soon as he was done with the preliminary check Dr Atherton tried to leave. Immediately. I had a list of questions I wanted to ask, first and foremost being “um excuse me he has fleas. Is there something you can do about that?” Bringing a stray cat in and having the vet not even check or ask about potential fleas OR worms is insane. Never managed to ask if he had worms as I was caught up with everything else. After he said “oh he has fleas?” He then asked if I wanted medication… no I just told you he has fleas to flex I’m about to have a home infestation. OBVIOUSLY I WANT MEDICATION. Then he tried to leave the room again! I said sir I have more questions! Ones that YOU should’ve asked about or answered WITHOUT me asking! I also asked if the kitty could be tested for feline herpes virus since he had symptoms, and the amazing doc Atherton said “we don’t need to test. 90% of cats already have it and if he’s sneezing he has it”. I’m no vet but that’s probably the dumbest diagnosis I’ve ever heard. A quick google search will tell you that is NOT true, just like my past THREE vets told me about my first cat when I checked him for herpesvirus. Ridiculous. He was recommended to me by someone with an older white dad who supposedly loves him, so not saying it was JUST because I was a quiet young woman with a stray cat that he acted like this, but it’s not outside the realm of possibilities. I will NEVER bring my cats here again. EDIT: brought the cat to another vet a few weeks after this terrible visit and it turns out he DOES have an internal parasite so he hasn’t gained any weight at all (actually lost .1 pounds). Basically, because of the negligence of this vet Squinkie could’ve died if I didn’t get a second opinion. Absolutely beyond ridiculous and quite frankly deadly to have someone so eager to push clients out the door he can’t bother to ensure the safety and health of the animals in his care when that is the literal job description. Great work!

If your pooch isn't perfectly trained, don't bother going in. I brought in a new rescue. He examined her nose WHILE raising the examination table several feet off the ground, which caused her to fall 4 feet. Then, already scared, the dog tried to jump down. Both times, she fell. He complained to his vet tech who walked in, that the dog wouldn't stay still. We had a similar experience with 2 other dogs where Atherton immediately became mad that the dog moved.
